Bethany Douglas Portfolios

Thank you for viewing my work.  My work is impressionistic and abstract, at the intersection of nature and the imagination.  I always begin with elements of randomness, such as marks on a canvas, a combination of colors, or a splatter of ink.  My task as an artist is to create something cohesive from what could just as easily turn into chaos.  I am interested in the different ways the the world around me can be understood and I aim to evoke a feeling rather than to reference something specific.  The shifting light across a landscape or the movement of water provide a moment of beauty amidst inevitable change.  Sometimes my work is a visual representation of an ambiguous or even exaggerated memory, particularly in my paintings that are inspired by the ocean.

I work mainly in acrylic and vinyl Flashe paints on canvas or canvas paper.  My smaller works are created with mixed media including ink, alcohol ink, paint, on canvas, on paper, or on yupo.  My formal art education has been at the Corcoran College of Art and Design and the Art League in Alexandria, Virginia.  I am from the Washington, DC area.

My work has been included in the following exhibits:

The Art League Gallery @ The Torpedo Factory January open (2023)
CollexArt Ode to the Ocean Showcase (online 2022)
Art Maryland 2022
The Art League Gallery @ The Torpedo Factory November open (2022)
Falls Church Arts 'Scapes (Oct/Nov 2022)
The Art League Gallery @ The Torpedo Factory September open (2022)
